Thanks to generous funding from the Bangor Fund, administered by the Development and Alumni Relations Office, the Students’ Union has been able to support the Boat Club in upgrading its small fleet. The new equipment has allowed the club to swiftly resume training and compete in events including the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) and Chester Regattas. Additionally, two damaged boats have been successfully repaired.
The Fleet Renewal Fund at 18ҹ Boat Club has greatly benefited the women's team, enabling more rowers to train simultaneously, boosting the club's training capacity. With increased access to water, rowers now receive more individualised coaching and practice, creating a more inclusive environment that encourages participation and skill development. This increased involvement and proficiency strengthen the club over time, cultivating a strong pool of talented rowers who will drive future competition success. Overall, the project has improved the quality of training, fleet safety, usability, and expanded competition opportunities.
Eleanor McQuair, Bangor Rowing Coach, said, “By commissioning a boat specifically designed for women, BUBC has taken a groundbreaking step that sets them apart from most other clubs. Traditionally, women have had to train in boats with equipment tailored for men, such as larger shoes, which hindered their performance. The new women's boat bolsters diversity and progression within the club, ensuring that all our rowers have the optimal equipment to reach their full potential.”
